Education
New Zealand requires children to attend school between the ages of 6 and 16, with most students continuing until the age of 17. Many schools offer the option to start at age 5, and it is not always necessary to wait until the beginning of the school year in February before enrolling a child.
-
Early Childhood Education (ECE) or preschool: optional from ages 0-5
-
Primary education: starts in Year 1, and ends with Year 8, so during these years, the vast majority of students will be 5-12 years old.
-
Secondary education: runs from Year 9 to Year 13, with students typically between the ages of 13 and 17. It is possible under some circumstances for students to finish their schooling in Year 12.
Early Childhood
Early childhood education (ECE) provides education and care for children before they are old enough to go to primary school. While not compulsory, it is acknowledged as a key component of a child’s development. Please consult with your Community Navigator to discuss the best options for your child (under five).
Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Education
Enrolling your child or teenager in school is a new and exciting adventure for the whole family. A device is issued to each family with school-aged children (6-16) by the Ministry of Education as well as age-appropriate education packs. Online lessons are provided three times a week until permanent housing is secured and the children can attend school physically.
Tertiary Education
All Universities, polytechnics and tertiary education providers welcome students with migrant and refugee backgrounds. Check the Tertiary Education Commission for information about universities, polytechnics and other tertiary providers including on-job trade training.
