Your Rights

In Aotearoa New Zealand, anyone using a health or disability service is protected by a code of rights.

  1. The right to be treated with respect.

  2. The right to be treated fairly, without pressure or discrimination.

  3. The right to dignity and independence.

  4. The right to receive a quality service.

  5. The right to receive information that you understand and that helps you communicate with the person who is serving you

  6. The right to receive the information you need to know about your health or disability, about the service provided and about the names and functions of the staff, as well as additional information to help you understand your own situation.

  7. The right to make decisions regarding your health for yourself, and to change your mind.

  8. The right to have a support person with you whenever possible.

  9. The right to maintain these rights if you are asked to participate in a research study or practice session to train staff.

  10. The right to file a claim and have it taken seriously.
